Maine Coon with blue eyes

Firstly, it is important to note that normally Maine Coons have gold, green, or brown eyes, but not blue unless they are white cats. Having blue eyes on a solid-colored Maine Coon is therefore a true genetic achievement and one of the jewels of the Maine Coon breed.

In this article, we will explore the wonders of this exceptional cat, the mysteries of its genetics, and its endearing personality.

History of the Maine Coon

Originating from the state of Maine in the United States, the Maine Coon breed is appreciated for its impressive size, rustic appearance, and gentle temperament.

Over the years, the Maine Coon breed has evolved, presenting a variety of colors and coat patterns, as well as eye shades ranging from golden to green, and of course, the captivating appearance of blue eyes. Today, most Maine Coons with blue eyes are found and bred in Russia. There are still very few breeders in France who work with Maine Coon blue-eyed cats. Blue eyes are predominantly found in white or colorpoint cats. To obtain a solid-colored Maine Coon with blue eyes, breeders likely had to cross Maine Coons with other cat breeds that carry dominant genes for blue eyes and solid coat colors, and then continue selecting and breeding successive generations for these specific traits. Today, all the ancestors of our blue-eyed Maine Coon cats within 5 generations are purebred Maine Coons.

However, it is important to note that blue eye color is often associated with genes that can cause health problems, such as deafness in white cats. Therefore, responsible breeders must be very cautious when attempting to breed cats for these specific traits.

Lastly, it is worth noting that even if a solid-colored Maine Coon can be born with blue eyes, the color of their eyes can change as they age. Many kittens are born with blue eyes that turn green, gold, or copper as they grow. Therefore, one must be cautious to avoid scams and ensure that your Maine Coon will indeed retain blue eyes.

Genetics of blue eyes in the Maine Coon:

The eye color in cats is determined by several genes. Blue eyes are generally associated with the presence of genes responsible for white fur or the colorpoint pattern. Blue eyes in a solid-colored Maine Coon are much rarer and require the utmost vigilance and professionalism to work with. For example, it is crucial never to breed two Maine Coons with blue eyes, as it would pose significant risks to the health and survival of the kittens.

The blue eye gene is a single dominant transmission gene. It is important to never crossbreed two Maine Coons with blue eyes.

Characteristics of the Maine Coon with blue eyes:

Blue eyes can be present in white Maine Coons, but they are much rarer in fully colored cats. Cats of classic colors such as black, blue, red, tabby, with or without white, very rarely or never have blue eyes. Until around 2015, the only breed of classic-colored cat with blue eyes was the Ojos Azules, a breed that has very few individuals remaining, and most of them are no longer breeding.

Today, there are very few individuals with blue eyes that are not white or colorpoint. Blue eyes and odd eyes in cats have always fascinated people. One notable example is Venus, a tortoiseshell cat with a unique color distribution Venus – Bing images , having one blue eye and one green eye. There are other cat breeds, like the British Shorthair, that have made more progress in breeding for blue eyes, such as the Celeste, a British Shorthair with blue eyes.
